Created in 1989, the International Olympafrica Foundation promotes the social development of young people through sport. Its activities include the construction of sports and education centres in Africa, the creation and financing of sporting programmes, the awarding of scholarships for young people and the funding of economic projects.

Overview

The Olympafrica programme was conceived by former International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Juan Antonio Samaranch to promote the social values of Olympism in Africa.
It is run by the International Olympafrica Foundation under the auspices of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA). Its headquarters are in Dakar, Senegal.
Open to African National Olympic Committees (NOCs), the Olympafrica programme improves the living conditions and promotes the development of the most disadvantaged communities.

Eligibility criteria

  • Programme exclusively for African NOCs
  • Must have a site (supported by a land title) that complies with the prerequisites in the specifications
  • Construction budget of $180,000 (excluding land), of which $30,000 must be contributed by the NOC concerned
  • Submission of a request with a firm commitment to adhere to the programme’s philosophy and abide by the rules defined in the specifications and in the International Olympafrica Foundation’s rules of procedure
  • Must involve local communities at all stages of construction of the centres in order to develop a sense of community belonging
