Sport en Commun is a pan-African digital platform designed to facilitate transformation through sport by connecting project managers with providers that can fund their activities and support them in their implementation.

Achieving the SDGs through sport

Sport is mentioned in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development as a unifying force and a vehicle for inclusion which contributes to peace, the empowerment of women and of young people, and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In line with the speech given by French President Macron in Ouagadougou in 2017, in which he emphasised the role of sport in economic and social development and in youth inclusion in Africa, the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) launched the Sport en Commun (Sport in Common) digital platform.

Sport en Commun also reflects the press conference held at the Elysée in February 2018 by President Weah of Liberia and President Macron regarding the creation of a platform specialising in incubation, funding and partnerships for inclusive sport in Africa.

“I have entrusted to the Agence Française de Développement […] the creation of this platform specialising in incubation, funding and partnerships for inclusive sport in Africa.”

Connecting the world of sport with the world of development funding

It is often difficult for project managers to find service and fund providers, and the complexity only increases for large-scale projects. The aim of the Sport en Commun platform is to connect project managers working on sport and development initiatives in Africa with providers who can fund their activities and support their implementation.

As a pan-African platform based in Dakar, Senegal, Sport en Commun aims to promote the support and funding of projects promoting development through sport in Africa.
By taking existing solutions supplemented by a range of tailor-made services, the Sport en Commun platform is positioned as a one-stop shop and pursues four main goals:

  • Facilitate and fast-track funding for projects of all sizes (micro, medium-sized and macro)
  • Promote and accelerate support for projects throughout their life cycle
  • Make contacts and interactions between stakeholders more fluid
  • Ensure promotion of the subject and encourage the sharing of experiences and feedback

Ensuring services that best meet users’ requirements

Sport en Commun is positioned as an effective bridge between the different stakeholders within the sport and development ecosystem, ranging from project managers to funding institutions. To do so, our team provide services such as managing calls for projects, organising proposals, helping projects to meet eligibility criteria, drafting focus studies and organising training sessions.

Through the use of a one-stop shop of tailor-made solutions, the platform is user-friendly and is continuously adapted to meet the different needs and requirements identified.

“[This platform] is a good initiative to help our young people gain access to education and employment through sport. […] We will work on it. It is important because [this project] gives young people the opportunity to have ownership, to feel love, to feel respected, and that is the best way forward.”
