Despite global progress towards achieving gender equality, women and girls – that is, half the world’s population – continue to face discrimination and violence. In addition to being a fundamental human right, gender equality is also a necessary foundation for achieving a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable world. Goal 5 aims to achieve gender equality in access to education, health and decent employment, which will benefit societies as a whole.

How can sport address this issue ?

Sport can be a powerful awareness-raising and educational tool for gender equality and provides a safe and fair environment for women and girls.

Sport promotes women’s empowerment and enhances the value of their physical and mental abilities in contexts where their bodies are often a social issue.

Sports helps to achieve a greater sense of self-esteem and self-confidence in everything we do. Inclusive sports programmes can therefore bring about positive and lasting changes in society that promote gender equality.
